Cost-per-action marketing has been around forever. But in the past few years it has exploded as more and more affiliates are getting involved. CPA marketing is basically a lead-generation activity. You provide leads to a company in a particular niche and that company pays you a commission.

There are middlemen in the process called CPA networks. A CPA network will hook up with dozens and dozens of companies willing to pay for leads, and affiliates can sign up for a network and earn commissions from any of the companies the network represents.

Who would pay for lead? An insurance company might pay for leads who have filled out a form online for a price quote. A real estate company might pay for leads who are interested in moving in or out of an area. A manufacturer might pay for leads who are interested in product samples, who are willing to complete a survey, or to evaluate a product.

Affiliates who can drive traffic to a manufacturer's or service providers page to complete some kind of form or request, can earn commissions. Some companies will pay less than a dollar a lead and some will pay $10, $20 or more per lead. It just depends on what product or service they are involved with.

CPA networks can be difficult to get in with (in some cases). The networks are kind of selective about the affiliates they take on board because they want highly qualified traffic for their companies they represent. This can be a stumbling block for many affiliates wanting to get in on the action--and that action can be substantial.

The very best affiliates involved in CPA marketing can make incredible commissions--and these commissions can be earned without ever making an actual sale. This is what makes CPA marketing so enticing. All an affiliate has to do is to drive traffic to a manufacturer's page where some action must be completed by visitors to earn the affiliate a commission.
